Yao Ming (Chinese: 姚明; Pinyin: Yáo Míng) (born September 12, 1980, in Shanghai, China) is a Chinese professional basketball player and is considered one of the best centers in the National Basketball Association (NBA) today. He is also among the tallest of players in the NBA standing at a height of 7'6". He is the only son of his father Yao Zhiyuan and Fang Fengdi. He played for the Shanghai Sharks of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) for five years, and now plays center for the Houston Rockets in the NBA. He was selected by Houston as the 1st overall pick of the 2002 NBA Draft and signed with them on October 21, 2002.

“回顾这个赛季的经历，碰到的球员、球队和自己的生活，都是全新的，我还需要适应，但这也是我最大的收获，因为我慢慢可以适应这样密集的赛事、跟这样高水平的球员对抗了。”阿联说，也因为确实学习和感悟到了新东西，所以他甚至不想给自己的这个赛季打个分，“有进步就好。反正在美国打比赛的经历，也能让我给国家队尽更多的力。”

NBA生涯，也让阿联成为姚明之外，中国男篮最倚重的核心球员之一。因为刚刚回到国内，也因伤没能跟国家队合练，“尤纳斯的战术体系中，我尚不知道自己将扮演什么角色”，但阿联认为，自己可能会更多地担任防守的任务。“奥运会是打高水平的比赛，大家更多的都是在比防守，因为你不知道什么时候能投篮成功，但你可以通过防守，去更好地控制对手。”向来不及姚明能说的阿联，采访时几乎不可能出现妙语连珠的场面，有些问题由于体育总局有规定不能多说，他就冲记者抱歉地笑，然后扭头向工作人员无奈地求助。不过，阿联很真诚，他说：“问备战奥运，我也不知道怎么说，反正，回到国家队，我觉得自己情绪很高涨，因为这是我的荣耀！”(本文来源：青年报)
